Ten Commandments of Tailgate

Game days are great opportunities to socialize and wear all of the clothes you bought for your school as a senior in high school touring the campus. If you go to a big school, football is not just a sport, it is a religion. With this being said, there are certain rules that are important to follow at any tailgate.

I. Thou shalt NOT take beer unless it is offered to you specifically. There is no way that you are allowed to offer yourself drinks from other people’s painted coolers. Luckily, if you are a girl, there are plenty of drunk frat guys who will kindly offer you a drink if you turn on the charm.

II. Always keep your drink in a koozie or in a cute container. There are so many cute koozies with sratty sayings on painted flasks or other drink holding objects that look a lot classier than a can of Natty Lite. If you are underage, it looks like you are sporting a Big One cup from the nearest gas station filled with whatever booze you are offered.

III. Morning tailgates are no time to go hard. When there are games at noon, tailgate can start at eight in the morning. In this case, you should restrict yourself to mimosas because a morning beer is a frat guy move, and you are a lady. You are allowed to attend the kegs and eggs, but don’t try to keg stand at 9am.

IV. Try to make it to the game. If you are too drunk to drag yourself to the stadium, then you need to learn how to compose yourself. The ideal maneuver is to get a buzz for the game and leave when you sober up to go out. Win or lose we still booze, but you have to know how the game ended to know if you are celebrating a victory or mourning a loss.

V. If you are not at your own school, you are not allowed to attend tailgates in the rival team’s colors. This is a jack-ass move, and if you do this you are subject to ridicule (and drunk people don't hold back). School spirit is at its highest before a football game, so don't be stupid and resist that.

VI. Under no circumstance is it okay to wear your letters while tent hopping. You know it isn’t allowed by Panhellenic, and wearing the wrong shirt is not worth getting sent to standards. Save your game day buttons for cute throw what you know pictures in the stadium. You are allowed to have a drunk glow, but you should leave out the evidence of drinking.

VII. Eat. You are drinking all day so try to have something besides cheap beer or wine in your stomach. Who doesn't love food? Tailgate food is always delicious anyways so fill up your plate with wings and hamburgers. General rule of thumb: for every drink have at least one item of food.

VIII. Thou shall always pay a visit to your favorite fraternity’s tent/house. You may decide to run for their sweetheart one day, so put in your time as a loyal to their game day festivities. These guys are your best fraternity friends, so they know how you like your burger and will keep the drinks flowing.

IV. Thou shall play the tailgate games. You must play beer pong, corn hole, or at least do an ice luge. Tailgates are a time honored tradition with special games just like any respectable event. Play at least one of these to ensure you get the max out of your tailgate.

X. Thou shall turn school spirit on full blast. You should be talking your team up so much it sounds like you are trying to sell them to someone. Show nothing but school pride and most definitely know the fight song. You should be singing it at the top of your lungs with your sisters and fraternity friends when your team scores. Be an obnoxious fan because what’s the point of going to a game if you don’t think you’re team is the best around?
