Reasons to Do Spring Recruitment

If you were unable to make it to your fall recruitment, you most likely decided to try spring. If you are one of these people, for the love of god, DO NOT WAIT FOR FALL FORMAL RECRUITMENT.

  1. Fall recruitment may be worth the suffering and long days, but there is no reason to go through it if you have another option that gives you the same results. Fall is many long days of walking around greek row in heels that are blistering your feet while trying to keep your makeup from melting off your face in the summer heat.

  2. Spring is so much more relaxed and ACTUALLY gives you a sense of the sisterhood. During fall you are limited to 15 minute conversations that are more structured, but in spring, you have more time to attend an event and talk to girls in the sorority in a less intense environment. Spring events are planned by a chair member, so they will give you a sense of how well philanthropy events and socials will be organized. The rush events in spring are actually things sisters do together, so it is more realistic to try and find a home.

  3. You have less competition. This sounds bad. I realize how bad that sounds, but no matter how much we try to deny it recruitment is like a fast forwarded pageant circuit with 2,000 girls fighting for 30 spots in a top-tier sorority (as much as we try to hide it, yes, tiers in sororities are a very real thing). Even if you have a fantastic resume, you might not be invited back based on a crazy reason. This isn’t the sorority’s fault, they can’t help that there is a limit to the girls they can accept. The sororities that take part in spring recruitment, however, have spots they need to fill to fill a quota, so they are more likely to need you to take their bid. Also, there are probably a quarter of amount of girls going through the process, so there are a lot less people to fight for it.

  4. You have so much more time with each house, and you can choose how much time you want to spend at each house. Spring recruitment events are a few hours long, so you can talk to girls long enough to get past the awkward small talk and talk to more sisters. During formal recruitment, you are lucky to talk to two girls for 10 minutes each...how are you supposed to feel out an entire 150 member sisterhood by only talking to 2 girls? In addition, you can pick how many events you go to for each house. If you rule one out and like 2 a lot, you are able to go to all of their events and not attend the third house’s events, and you won’t be penalized for skipping. During formal recruitment, if its on your schedule, you have to go even if Alpha Alpha Alpha was your worst conversation and you hated their philanthropy. This leaves more time to compare the sororities that are actually in the running for your heart.

  5. Fall is a whole year away. Why miss an entire semester and summer of getting to know your best friends, being involved on campus, and working with academic mentors? You will hear it from people who waited until sophomore or junior year to rush: they wish they had more time with their sorority. Once you are in, you will never want to be an alum. These are the best days of your life, and your sisters make them 17398326746398471 times better, so don’t waste a semester of your life not knowing them.
